CPL (cost per lead) is ad spend divided by leads. CPA (cost per acquisition) is ad spend divided by customers or sales. ROAS (return on ad spend) is revenue divided by ad spend. CPL measures how cheaply you get enquiries, CPA how cheaply you get buyers, and ROAS whether the ads earn more than they cost.
CPL, CPA and ROAS measure three different stages of the same journey: the enquiry, the sale and the money. Cost per lead tells you how cheaply ads bring enquiries. Cost per acquisition tells you how much you paid in ads for each customer. Return on ad spend tells you how much revenue came back for every rupee, dirham or pound spent. Teams that judge ads only on CPL often scale the wrong campaign.
The formulas
| Metric | Formula | Answers the question |
|---|---|---|
| CPL (cost per lead) | Ad spend ÷ leads | How cheap are enquiries? |
| CPA (cost per acquisition, or cost per customer) | Ad spend ÷ customers or sales | How much do buyers cost? |
| ROAS (return on ad spend) | Revenue from those customers ÷ ad spend | Do the ads earn more than they cost? |
CPA can mean cost per action in some ad tools, where the action might be a sign-up or a lead. In this answer, CPA means a paying customer or a sale, which is the version that matters for a sales team.
An example
Two campaigns each spend ₹50,000 in a month. The average sale is ₹40,000. The numbers are illustrative.
| Campaign A | Campaign B | |
|---|---|---|
| Leads | 500 | 250 |
| CPL | ₹100 | ₹200 |
| Customers | 10 | 20 |
| CPA | ₹5,000 | ₹2,500 |
| Revenue | ₹4,00,000 | ₹8,00,000 |
| ROAS | 8x | 16x |
By CPL, Campaign A looks twice as good. By CPA and ROAS, Campaign B is twice as good. Moving budget to B is the right call, and Ads Manager alone would not show it.
When to use each
- CPL: daily and early. It reacts fast, so use it to catch broken ads, tired creative or a bad form in the first days of a campaign.
- CPA: weekly and monthly. It needs closed sales, so wait for your normal sales cycle before judging. A property campaign judged after two weeks will always look bad.
- ROAS: monthly, for budget decisions. Compare it with your break-even ROAS, which is 1 divided by your gross margin. At a 40% margin you need 2.5x just to cover ad spend.
What you need to measure CPA and ROAS
Meta knows spend and leads but not sales that close in a chat, a showroom or a clinic. You need the ad ID stored on every lead (Meta returns it with each form lead, and with the first message from a Click-to-WhatsApp ad), the outcome of every lead, and the deal value of every win. Then the join happens in your CRM or sheet.
How salestrack helps
salestrack's Meta ads ROI syncs Meta and Google ad spend by campaign, ad set and ad, keeps the ad on each lead, and attributes revenue when your team marks a deal won with a value. You see cost per lead, cost per customer and ROAS side by side, with a drill-down from campaign to ad. It works alongside Ads Manager rather than replacing it.
Related questions
Is CPA the same as CAC?
They are close but not the same. CPA usually counts only ad spend per customer or sale from that ad. CAC (customer acquisition cost) usually includes all sales and marketing costs, such as salaries and tools, divided by new customers.
What is cost per result in Meta Ads Manager?
It is spend divided by the result your campaign optimises for. For a leads campaign the result is usually a lead, so cost per result is your CPL. It is not your CPA unless the result is a purchase.
Which is more important, CPL or ROAS?
ROAS, or cost per customer, because they reflect sales. CPL is useful for spotting problems early, but a campaign with cheap leads that rarely buy can lose money.
What is a good CPA?
One that leaves profit after the sale. If the average customer brings 20,000 rupees of gross profit, any CPA well below that is working. Compare CPA with your margin, not with another business's number.
How do I calculate CPA when sales happen on WhatsApp or the phone?
Store the ad ID on every lead, mark leads as won in your CRM, then divide each ad's spend by the customers it produced. Ads Manager cannot see these sales on its own.
