Is WhatsApp marketing free?

Updated · By the salestrack team

Short answer

Partly. Messages you send from the WhatsApp Business app have no per-message charge, but the app suits small, one-to-one marketing. On the WhatsApp Business API, Meta charges for every delivered marketing template, by the recipient's country. Messages inside a free entry point window, opened when someone messages you from a Click-to-WhatsApp ad and you reply within 24 hours, are free.

WhatsApp marketing is free only at a small scale. The WhatsApp Business app does not charge per message, and replying to customers who write to you costs nothing in the app. Once you want to send campaigns to hundreds or thousands of people, you need the WhatsApp Business API, where Meta charges for each marketing message that is delivered. A few windows on the API are free, and they are worth planning around.

These rules come from Meta's pricing documentation, checked on 1 November 2026. Meta charges per delivered message, based on the message category and the recipient's country calling code. Marketing messages cost more than utility messages in most countries. Meta publishes the exact rates on its rate card.

Why the free app runs out of road

  • App broadcast lists reach only people who have saved your number, according to WhatsApp's Help Center.
  • WhatsApp tells users not to bulk message or auto-message from the app, and bans accounts that are reported many times.
  • There are no per-person delivery reports or team-wide inbox for a sales team.
  • Free "bulk sender" extensions that automate the app break WhatsApp's rules and put your number at risk.

How to keep WhatsApp marketing cheap

  • Let customers message first. Put a click-to-chat link or QR code on your website, profile and shop counter. Replies inside the 24-hour window can be free-form messages instead of paid templates.
  • Use Click-to-WhatsApp ads. Reply within 24 hours to each ad chat, and the brochure, price list and follow-up offer you send in the next week are free.
  • Segment before you send. A campaign to 500 interested people costs a tenth of one to 5,000 and gets fewer blocks.
  • Pick the right category. A genuine reminder approved as utility costs less than marketing. Meta decides the category, and promotional wording makes a template marketing.

How salestrack helps

salestrack starts free; WhatsApp features need a paid plan (see pricing). WhatsApp message charges come from a prepaid WhatsApp wallet, and the app shows the exact rate and the cost of each broadcast before you send. Click-to-WhatsApp chats land in the shared inbox with a 24-hour window timer, so your team replies while messages are still free or cheap. See how message charges work.

Related questions

How much does WhatsApp marketing cost?

On the API, Meta charges per delivered marketing message, and the rate depends on the recipient's country. Rates are on Meta's published rate card. Most businesses also pay for the software they send through.

Can I do WhatsApp marketing for free?

On a small scale, yes: the WhatsApp Business app, a catalogue, status updates and replies to customers who message you cost nothing per message. For campaigns to large lists, delivery reports and team inboxes, you need the API, which is paid per message.

Are messages from Click-to-WhatsApp ads free?

Your replies can be. If a person messages you from a Click-to-WhatsApp ad on the Android or iOS app and you reply within the 24-hour window, Meta opens a free entry point window that may last up to 7 days. Marketing, utility, authentication and service messages in it are free. You still pay for the ads.

Do I pay for messages customers send me?

No. Meta does not charge for messages from customers to your business, and it charges only for messages that are delivered.
