Use a group when members should talk to each other, such as a project team or a class. Use a WhatsApp Business app broadcast list for a few customers who saved your number. Use an API broadcast for marketing and reminders at scale: it reaches any opted-in number with an approved template and reports delivery and reads.
All three send one message to many people, but they are built for different jobs. A group is a shared conversation. A broadcast list in the WhatsApp Business app is a shortcut for sending the same message to several saved contacts as separate chats. An API broadcast sends an approved template to opted-in customers through the WhatsApp Business Platform, at the scale your messaging limit allows.

When a group makes sense
Groups suit a site team, a batch of students, a residents' association or a dealer network, where everyone benefits from seeing everyone else's messages. They are a poor fit for customer marketing. Every member sees every other member, one person's complaint is read by all, and adding people without asking is against WhatsApp's guidance: get permission first, and if someone leaves, do not add them back.
When an app broadcast list makes sense
A broadcast list in the WhatsApp Business app sends your message to each person as a separate chat, so nobody sees the other recipients. It works for a small business with a short list of regular customers. The catch is delivery: WhatsApp says broadcast messages are received only by people who have saved your number. It also warns that frequent broadcasts can lead to reports, and accounts reported many times are banned.
When to move to API broadcasts
Move to the WhatsApp Business API when any of these is true:
- Your list is in the hundreds or thousands.
- Many customers have not saved your number, such as new leads from ads.
- You need to know who received, read and replied.
- Several people on your team need to answer the replies.
- You need opt-outs handled automatically.
On the API, every message you start must be an approved template. Your reach is set by your messaging limit, which starts at 250 unique people per moving 24 hours and grows with business verification and good quality. Meta charges per delivered message, so segmenting your list keeps both cost and blocks down.
How salestrack helps
salestrack runs API broadcasts to lists or self-updating segments, removes opted-out contacts, and shows the audience size and wallet cost before you send. Replies go to the shared inbox with an owner. With coexistence you can keep the WhatsApp Business app on the same number for one-to-one chats. See lists and segments.
Related questions
Can members of a WhatsApp group see each other's numbers?
Yes, group members can see the other members and every message posted. That is why customer lists should not be put in a group. WhatsApp's guidance is to get permission before adding anyone to a group.
Why are my broadcast list messages not delivered to some people?
WhatsApp's Help Center says broadcast list messages are received only by people who have added your number to their contacts. Ask customers to save your number, or move to API broadcasts, which do not need that.
Can I use broadcast lists after connecting my number to the API?
Not for new sends. With coexistence, Meta says you cannot create new broadcast lists in the app and existing ones become read-only. Bulk sending moves to approved templates through the API.
Which is cheapest?
Groups and app broadcast lists have no per-message charge. API broadcasts are charged by Meta per delivered template message, by category and country, in return for reach, opt-out handling and reports.
